Oberammergau is best known for its once-per-decade production of The Passion Play depicting the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ, and has been performed by local citizens once every decade since 1634.

Tickets for the Oberammergau Passionsspiele 2022 (Passion Play postponed from 2020) are available as part of tour groups, package deals with hotel stays, and individual play-only tickets.

Tickets for the Passion Play Oberammergau 2022 are on sale in a similar format than was used for the Passionsspiele 2010 (and the postponed performances from 2020). The Passion Play tickets are available as part of traditional tour group packages, “arrangement tickets” that include hotel stays and play tickets, as well as 2022 performance-only tickets. Tours and package deals are a sensible option for advance planning, as hotel accommodation near Oberammergau will only be available as part of “arrangements” and public transportation after shows are problematic.

The world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play will be performed around 100 times between 14 May 2022 and 2 October 2022 in the small Bavarian town Oberammergau in the south of Germany.

NOTE: The Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 has been postponed until 2022. No performances took place in 2020.

Tickets for the Passion Play Oberammergau 2022 are available in four versions:

• Ticketholders for the postponed 2020 play could convert tickets to the 2022 Passion Play – See Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 Postponed Until 2022 Passionsspiele for details.
• As part of an organized group tour – these tickets are sold only to bona fide tour operators. Individuals may only buy these tickets from resellers as part of a longer group tour. Such tours are sold all over the world by major tour operators.
• Package deals – these arrangements include tickets to the passion play, meals, and overnight hotel stays. These package deals for the Passion Play Oberammergau are sold directly to individuals by the event organizers.
• Passion Play performance tickets only – tickets to only the Passion Play Oberammergau 2022 without any accommodation, meals, or transportation are on sale since October 5, 2020. These performance-only tickets are sold directly to individuals and will not be available through resellers. Tickets bought through resellers will be more expensive and may not even be valid. Early 2021, tickets are still available from the organizers at the regular prices for almost all performances.

Which Tickets to Buy for the Passionsspiele Oberammergau 2022

Tickets for the Oberammergau passion play concerts usually sell out despite around a hundred performances that have seating for 4,500 spectators per show. With nearly half a million visitors expected in the village for the play, a bit of planning when buying tickets is sensible, especially for foreign visitors.

Seeing the Passion Play Oberammergau 2022 as part of a tour group ensures that tickets will be available on specific dates. Tours are usually available including airfare from various countries, or at much lower prices shorter bus tours may also be available from other German and European cities.

Package deals with hotel accommodation, meals, and theater tickets are a good alternative. During the passion play period, all overnight accommodation reservations in the Oberammergau region will only be available through the official booking channels as part of such package deals. Package deals range from around €250 to €1200 depending on the choice of hotel, seating category, and the duration of the stay (one or two nights). Performance tickets are of course the cheapest and are only sold directly to individual buyers. Tickets are available for almost all performances and price classes. Buy only directly from the event organizers. Note that public transportation is problematic after the show.

Ticket prices for the Passion Play Oberammergau 2022 range from €30 to €180 – paying less than €120 may be saving at the wrong end.

The Passionstheater in Oberammergau seats around 4,500. The theater is partly open-air but all seats are under roof cover and the performances are not canceled due to rain.

The Passion Play Oberammergau is performed by over 2,000 local villagers in German – English guide books are provided.

Oberammergau is in a beautiful part of Bavaria with many different things to do in addition to seeing the Passion Play. Further religious sights include nearby Ettal Monastery and the Wieskirche – a defining work of the Bavaria Rococo and inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. In addition to the beautiful nature of the Bavarian Alps, visitors can also tour two fantasy palaces of Bavarian Mad King Ludwig – his Disney-like Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle and the small but actually completed Schloss Linderhof Palace. Transportation to Oberammergau is usually easy but due to the Passion Play performances ending late at night, not a viable option for after-theater travel. The Bayern-Ticket is a very good local transportation deal when traveling in Bavaria on public transportation.
